Letters and Numbers

We invite you to a charity lecture with a bioinformatician. Many professions are traditionally considered "female" or "male." For example, popular culture has solidified the image of a programmer as a primarily male profession. But has it always been this way—and do men have any real advantages in this field? In this lecture, you will learn about the contribution of women to the emergence and development of programming as a profession, and examine a study comparing the quality of code written by men and women. You will find out how Byron's daughter wrote the first program, how many men programmed the first American computer, what role Cosmopolitan magazine played in the history of programming, and who, in the end, programs better—guys or girls? Half of the ticket proceeds will go towards treating Jackie the dog, and the other half will go to the LAN cat fund. The lecture will be conducted by Liza Grigorashvili—a bioinformatician, teacher, researcher of microbial genomics, and graduate of Skoltech (Mikhail Gelfand's laboratory). Payment is in cash at the door. All proceeds from the lecture will be donated to charity.
